Despite being 863 light-years away from Earth, Rigel is the 7th brightest star in the sky. This blue supergiant has an intrinsic luminosity that is 10,000x greater than that of the Sun. It belongs to one of the most recognizable constellations in the sky, Orion, and is clearly visible on clear winter evenings in the Northern Hemisphere.
